Furniss & Quinn: A Brief History Furniss & Quinn, P.C. was conceived by Tom Furniss in 1975, when he began his solo private practice 3 years after graduation from the University of Virginia School of Law. The firm took its name in 1976 when Tom was joined by John Quinn, and grew with the addition of the other Quinn brothers, Joe in 1981 and Jim in 1983. The Quinn brothers all arrived at the firm via the College of the Holy Cross and the University of Connecticut School of Law. With the addition of Attorney James F. Aspell in 1987, the firm grew to five attorneys. (2004 update - Joseph P. Quinn, Jr. has left the full time practice of law but remains as "of counsel" to the firm. Madeleine A. Lemieux, a long time paralegal, graduated from law school, passed the bar exam and has joined the firm as an associate) lawyers Our Practice Areas Furniss & Quinn, P.C. is a general practice law firm with extensive experience in a wide variety of legal matters including personal injury, general litigation, worker's compensation claims, family matters, criminal, corporate, and businesslaw, and of course, all aspects of real estate law. We are conveniently located at 248 Hudson Street, with ample parking, near the Hartford courts and are easily accesible from all of Hartford's suburbs.John J. Quinn has been a co-managing partner of Furniss & Quinn, P.C. since the founding of the firm. He has practiced in many areas of the law, including personal injury, workers' compensation, real estate planning, negligence, family, criminal, probate and small business. Attorney Quinn participates in many pre-paid legal plans, and is a Board Certified Workers' Compensation Specialist. This designation requires the completion of continuing legal education in the field of workers' compensatin and also requires that at least twenty-five percent of cases involve compensation claims. A rigorous examination was involved in qualifying for the certification.Attorney Quinn has served the community throughout his career. In 1989, he was selected by a committee composed of Superior Court Judges to serve as counsel to the Hartford Judicial District Grievance Panel for Geographical Area 13 and the town of Hartford. He has successively been appointed to this position each year since. In this capacity, he serves as the attorney for the local grievance panel which investigates allegations of misconduct against practicing attorneys. He has also provided legal services to the disadvantaged and to indigent persons through his services with the Hartford County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Panel, the Pro-Bono Referral Project and as a Criminal Justice Act Panel Attorney in the United States District Court. In his personal time, Attorney Quinn has been involved as a coach in youth sports including baseball, basketball and soccer. Attorney Quinn graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1973, In Cursu Honoris, and he completed his studies at the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1976. He is a member of the Hartford County Bar Association, the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association and the Connecticut Bar Association. Joseph P. Quinn, Jr. has recently left private practice to pursue full time employment with the State of Connecticut. He will serve as Chief of Legal Services for the Senate Democrats. He will remain of counsel to Furniss & Quinn, P.C. Attorney Quinn was in private practice in Hartford for over 20 years as a Partner at Furniss & Quinn, P.C., where he focused on general litigation, criminal defense, real estate, family matters, social security, probate and corporate matters, with a particular emphasis on personal injury and workers compensation.From 1986 until commencing his new job, Attorney Quinn served as Co-counsel to the Connecticut State Senate Democratic Caucus, and was a member of the Connecticut Law Revision Commission through 1994. In 1999, he was appointed to the State Marshal Commision by the Honorable Kevin B. Sullivan, President Pro Tempore of the State Senate. He has worked to provide legal services to indigent and disadvantaged citizens through his work with the former Pro Bono Referral Project, is a member of the Hartford County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Panel, and was a Juvenile Court Panel Attorney.Attorney Quinn is a member of the Hartford County Bar Association, the Connecticut Bar Association, the Connecticut Trial Lawyer's Association, the American Trial Lawyer's Association. He is admitted to practice before all Connecticut State Courts and the US District Court for the District of Connecticut.Attorney Quinn is a 1971 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and a 1981 graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Law.Attorney Quinn has tried several civil cases in Superior Court to verdict before juries or the Court, has appeared before the Appellate Court, has completed over thirty formal hearings before the Workers' Compensation Commission, and has argued several times before the Compensation Review Board.
